Our culture perpetuates sexual violence. It doesn’t have to be this way.

Rape culture is everywhere. It’s so pervasive, we don’t even see it unless we know to look for it. ThinkProgress reporters explain what this looks like, and why it doesn’t have to be this way.

RAMOND: every two minutes in the United States.

FORD: But perpetrators of sexual violence are less likely to serve jail time

CULP-RESSLER: than the people who commit any other kind of violent crime.

ISRAEL: any other kind of violent crime.

ADAM PECK, ThinkProgress: It’s when 2 out of 3 sexual assaults go unreported

CULP-RESSLER: most commonly because the victims fear retaliation.

VARKIANI: Rape culture is built on harmful gender stereotypes,

RAMOND: where men are seen as entitled to sex,

FORD: and women are expected to provide it.
