Law enforcement officials said Friday that 21-year-old Dylann Storm Roof confessed to shooting and killing nine people at a historic black church in Charleston, N.C.

Officials say that Roof purchased the .45-caliber handgun used in the shooting at a Charleston gun store in April. This appears to be a different story from the one his uncle told Reuters about Roof’s father giving him for his birthday.

Roof is scheduled to appear at a bond hearing on Friday afternoon. He is currently being held at the Al Cannon Detention Center.

Roof’s bond hearing on Friday addressed a weapons charge, but not the murder charges for the nine victims. The judge set that bond at $1 million, and Roof remains in jail. Victims’ families addressed Roof, one of whom said, “I forgive you.”
