‘Gulf of Mexico Sponsored By’ … BP, Shell, Chevron and ExxonMobil?

NY Times climate blogger snapped this too-ironic video in his recent trip to the New Orleans:

Revkin writes on YouTube:

I have nothing against corporate sponsorship of aquarium exhibits, but, given what happened in the Gulf in 2010, the wording on the sign on this tank at the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans is way too loaded.

I guess the pitch for being “sponsored by” Big Oil is like the one the Mafia uses: “You’ve got a nice body of water there, it’d be a shame if anything happened to it…”

And much like the Mafia, things just never end well when you’re sponsored by Big Oil:

  • Nature Geoscience study concludes ocean dead zones “devoid of fish and seafood” are poised to expand and “remain for thousands of years.”
  • Geological Society: Acidifying oceans spell marine biological meltdown “by end of century”
