This morning, Walmart announced it would provide bonuses of up to $1,000 to its employees. While the one-time payments amounted to just 2% of the windfall the company received from Trump’s corporate tax cut, the company received laudatory coverage on national TV.

Walmart used its bonus announcement as cover for the abrupt closure of dozens of its Sam’s Club stores nationwide, resulting in thousands of layoffs. The local news covered the quiet devastation as employees showed up to find their workplaces shuttered.
